Das Whitworth-Gewinde, auch als Zoll-Gewinde bezeichnet wird heute als British Standard Thread (BSP) auf dem europäischem Festland angewendet.

Sir Joseph Whitworth führte es 1841 als ersten genormtes Gewinde in der Welt ein.

Ein nicht selbstdichtendes Gewinde besteht meist durch ein paralleles Innengewinde und ein konisches Aussengewinde. Man benötigt Teflonband oder Dichtfaden für Kunststoff bzw. Teflonband, Dichtfaden oder Hanf für Metallgewinde zum Abdichten.
