Important: Unlike injection-moulded fittings, these fittings are thermally formed from pipe. Dimensions and design may therefore vary slightly.

The PVC 90° long bend has the lowest resistance to flowing liquids compared to a PVC-U 90° Elbow or a PVC-U Short Bend. Every change in direction – and even every pipe – creates frictional resistance that negatively affects flow rate. When liquids pass through fittings such as elbows, turbulence occurs which slows down the fluid. If the directional change is less abrupt – when comparing Elbow to Short Bend to Long Bend – less turbulence forms, ensuring a more stable flow velocity.

Long Bend vs Short Bend vs Elbow

PVC-U Elbow compared to PVC-U Bend

The PVC-U elbow is certainly the most commonly used fitting, allowing a 90° turn over a short distance. Because of its compact shape, it is also known as a knee piece. PVC elbows or PVC knee fittings are the standard components in any piping system. Two elbows installed consecutively form a semicircle – i.e. a 180° change in direction – while opposite bonding creates an S-bend. Due to its low cost, the PVC-U elbow is the best choice when flow losses are not a concern.

However, high frictional resistance slows the fluid and causes an unstable flow. In systems where a high and constant flow rate is required, PVC elbows are not the best choice, as vortex formation within the elbow significantly reduces flow speed. Where high flow rates are needed – for example, with pumps that provide a high volume but low head (e.g. pond systems) – PVC bends are the better choice.
